Dragon Boat Racing in South Africa an ancient, colourful, dramatic, oriental water-sport

South African Dragon Boat Racing Clubs warmly welcome all visiting dragon boaters & people interested in taking it up as a sport to join in our practice sessions. For rides around the harbour with your children, please contact the Waterfront Boat Company or the Jolly Roger Pirate Ship This spectacular and exciting team sport originated in China over 2400 years ago and was introduced to South Africa in 1992 when two beautiful wooden flag-catching dragon boats were presented to Cape Town by our sister city in Taiwan. Johannesburg now has a fleet of these boats and in February 2006, the Western Cape Dragon Boat Association took custodianship of two more, bringing Cape Town's fleet of flag-catchers to four. Launching the new flag-catchers. On January 24th 2009 five new fibreglass IDBF standard racing boats were launched in Cape Town, bringing the V&A Waterfront fleet to eight. These new boats were built by the Whisper Boat Building Academy for the deaf, so not only have we increased our fleet and therefore our outreach programmes, but the boats have been built by a very worth-while organization.
