self assessment....
  • are you in time? or are you rushing the sweep? or are you lagging behind?
  • are you burying your blade completely?
  • are you the mirror image of your partner? (position-wise)
  • are both your arms straight as you reach forward to the catch? or is the top arm bent down at the elbow
  • is your body rotated in as you reach forward or are you looking at your blade?
  • are you pulling back too far?

you should all be in the same position as Jenny - are you?

and on the right, are you in the same position as Sharon?

is your blade fully buried?

looking good ! ...if you'd like enlargements of any of these I have them in bigger resolution

This shows the classic problem of a really powerful first stroke

Pulling with all your might before the blade is fully buried,
you create a whirlpool & give the paddlers behind you white water.

In the adrenaline rush of "GO!"
drive the paddle down deep - and then pull.

A lot of people still make white water and whirlpools
like this - even after many years of paddling .

It is something stronger paddlers need to really focus on at the start.
