Chairman's Comment
Starting with sad things first, I am really sorry to hear Shane and Kerri will be leaving us but hope they will make many dragonboat friends in Australia, find good jobs and be happy there, but I also hope that they don't stay away too long! My commiserations go to the Paddlesnappers.
On a really cheerful note, we have two new adult clubs, both of which are clubs I have been trying to get going for many years and both of who will be an asset to dragonboating in the Cape.
A big welcome to the V&A Dragon Flyers under the captaincy of Wayne. Dragon Flyers train on Mondays and entered their first league event on Sunday after only 2 practice sessions. In spite of it being a Sunday and Wayne being away on sick leave, they had a full team on the water, well done.
The other team is a very special team, the first Breast Cancer Survivor Dragon Boat team in Africa. Ladies we salute you and welcome you very warmly into our dragon family. We have had three eveing sessions so far and already I am beginning to wonder if we should switch from Thursdays to Wednesdays so we can have two boats! We are going into winter, which can be wet, and cold but we often have calm balmy beautiful evenings for paddling. To keep enthusiasm going on those wet evenings, we are aiming to enter a team into the first ever BCS World Championships in Singapore this September. I have had several emails from ladies saying they were so excited after their first practice they couldn't sleep and Mujaji had one lady, Jenny, paddling with them on Sunday!
There are a couple of other really good things in the pipeline for you all ... watch this space...
May the dragon's breath be at your back
Pam

WELCOME A warm welcome must be extended to the new committee of Paddlesnappers. Thor has taken on the task of chairman while supporting him is Vince Naude. WCDBA is glad to have the super efficient Ben as secretary and wish these three as well as the rest of the committee good luck with the next year.
BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS Congratulations Pam, on the successfull launch of a long time dream and promise. Your ladies are full of fun and laughter, not to mention a very competitive spirit. There have been some WCDBA members volunteering their time to assist Pam and to all of you: THANK YOU!!!
WELCOME BACK A long time ago in February, an old (not so) face re-appeared on a dragon boat in Cape Town. As original members of the Western Cape, these two snuck off to Gauteng before coming home. So a big welcome back to two strong paddlers: Martin and Carol. Martin is currently the coach for Paddlesnappers and is to be congratulated for the outstanding performance of the club on Sunday.
